Welcome to New Orleans, home to historic architecture, mouthwatering cuisines, and legendary jazz. Save Art is always looking for new ways to contribute to the ever-evolving art community by supporting both artists and art-based causes. Our eighth project explores the city of New Orleans and one of its greatest musical treasures, the iconic American genre of jazz. We traveled to the Crescent City to learn as much as we could about jazz from those who know it best. While there, we wanted to create a unique artifact to commemorate the past and present artists of the city. We scoured junk yards for metal salvaged from buildings and homes affected by gentrification, natural disasters, and housing redevelopment programs. Master instrument builder Mike "The Horn Doctor" Corrigan transformed the remnants we found into a one-of-a-kind playable trumpet. The trumpet and our corresponding video-journalism project on jazz are being displayed and used in educational programs at the top music museums across the country. This national touring exhibit, titled "A NEW Sound," is currently on view. Check below to see where it's off to next.

A TRUMPET MADE FROM:
The trumpet is made from copper piping, a door handle, a light switch, silver serving-ware, brass plates, and other miscellaneous metal items. Visit the trumpet on display and let us know what you find!
ABOUT MIKE CORRIGAN:
Mike Corrigan, The Horn Doctor, is a master craftsman of brass instruments. Corrigan founded his shop B.A.C. Horn Doctor when he was just 24 years old. Through the years, Corrigan has worked with and advised Calicchio Custom Trumpets, Earl Williams Custom Trombones, Eastman’s ‘Shires by Eastman’ Professional Trombones, Conn-Selmer’s 'King Marching' Brass Instruments, Jupiter Musical Instruments, among other organizations. Corrigan now offers a range of custom and standard instruments including trombones, trumpets, sackbuts, flutes, alto saxophones, and clarinets. Corrigan was presented a key to the city of New Orleans by Mayor Mitch Landrieu in recognition of his efforts to rebuild the city's instruments, and its music community, following Hurricane Katrina.
